Account Settlement in Fiscal Year 2017

Nidec group has produced many products that now have leading global market shares, such as HDD motors with 85% share in the global market, by utilizing the characteristics of brushless DC motors, namely, "energy saving, durability, and low noise," at the core of its business. Nidec's motors can be used in a wide range of applications from IT equipment, and audio & visual equipment to home appliances and automobiles. Our motors are supporting people's lives.

Small Precision Motors

 

Nidec has the world’s largest market share with its hard disk drive (HDD) motors used in personal computers and data centers. Other mall precision motors include vibration motors for smartphones and mobile phones, fan motors, office automation equipment motors, and CD and DVD motors.

Fiscal Year 2017

Net sales of small precision motors for FY2017 (the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018) increased 4% to ¥452.4 billion compared to the previous fiscal year. Although the number of units sold of HDD motors decreased, there was an increase in sales amount due to a positive effect of the foreign currency exchange rate fluctuations. Net sales of other small precision motors increased 6% ¥260.9 billion compared to the previous fiscal year. This increase was mainly due to an increase in sales of DC motors and fan motors. Operating profit increased 7% to ¥72.7 billion.

In addition to electric power steering motors, which enjoy the world’s largest market share, our automotive products include pumps and sensors for advanced driving assistant system (ADAS). Our appliance, commercial, and industrial products include mid- to large-sized motors used for air conditioners and various other products.

Net sales of automotive, appliance, commercial and industrial products increased 42% to ¥814.0 billion for FY2017 (the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018) compared to the previous fiscal year. Net sales of automotive products increased 13% compared to the previous fiscal year mainly due to an increase in sales of electric power steering motors and control valves manufactured by Nidec Tosok Corporation, and a positive effect of the foreign currency exchange rate fluctuations. Net sales of appliance, commercial and industrial products for this fiscal year increased 67% compared to the previous fiscal year. This increase was mainly due to the newly consolidated subsidiaries, Nidec Leroy-Somer Holding and Nidec Control Techniques Limited of which the acquisitions were completed during the three months ended March 31, 2017 and Nidec Global Appliance Compressors of which the acquisition was completed during the three month ended September 30, 2017, and other factors. Operating profit of this category increased 39% to ¥79.4 billion.

Our products maintain a large market share in various applications such as industrial robots, ATM (automatic teller machine) card readers, semi conductor package and touch panel inspection equipment, and pressing machines.

(26% increase over FY2016)

Net sales of machinery increased 20% to ¥146.6 billion for FY2017 (the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018) compared to the previous fiscal year due to the newly consolidated subsidiaries, increase in sales of press machines, speed reducers, liquid crystal display panel handling robots, and other factors. Operating profit of this category increased 26% to ¥27.4 billion compared to the previous fiscal year due to increase in sales.

Net sales of electronic and optical components remained unchanged at ¥64.1 billion due to increases in the sales of switches, trimmers and sensors, and decreases in digital camera related components. Operating profit increased 82% to ¥9.9 billion compared to the prior year.

Net sales of electronic and optical components increased 11% to ¥71.0 billion for FY2017 (the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018) compared to the previous fiscal year due to increase in the sales of switches, trimmers and sensors. Operating profit decreased 1% to ¥9.7 billion compared to the previous fiscal year.
