Nidec ASI Closes Contract for a Large Order for UK’s Power Storage System
Nidec Corporation (OTC: NJDCY; TSE: 6594) today announced that Nidec ASI S.p.A. (Milan, Italy) (“Nidec ASI”) – a subsidiary of Nidec specializing in industrial solutions, a part of Nidec’s appliance, commercial and industrial motor business – has executed a contract with the UK’s EDF Energy Renewables (“EDF ER”) after being awarded with a large-scale order from the company concerning the installation and supply of a Battery Energy Storage System (“BESS”).
EDF ER, a renewable energy developer, is a joint venture company between the UK’s EDF Energy and France’s EDF Energies Nouvelles. As a result of this new contract, Nidec ASI will act as an EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) contractor and install and supply the 49MW BESS system that EDF ER builds for National Grid, a British electricity distribution company. The contract, which follows closely an earlier large-scale deal for a 10 MW battery energy storage system that was also for National Grid, has raised Nidec ASI’s share in the British BESS market to 33%.
As renewable energy resources are utilized to reduce environmental burden, investments in battery energy storage systems, which stabilize the power grid by temporarily storing surplus electricity and discharging the saved electricity during power shortages, are becoming increasingly prominent. Nidec ASI, the leader of the BESS market whose business achievements include last November’s delivery of the world’s largest-class, 90MW BESS system to major electricity firm STEAG of Germany, is committed to stabilizing the world’s power grids and contributing to realizing a low-carbon society via the spread and expansion of battery energy storage systems and high-quality state-of-the-art equipment.
