Nidec has achieved significant results through M&As. The secret to our success

Nidec’s growth and M&A strategy
Balancing organic growth and M&As

Motion-centric M&As geared to buy time

With 337 group companies* around the world, Nidec has grown into a global company.
M&As are one of the strategies that have supported this growth.

We focus our M&As on all that spins and moves, based on the concept of buying time, then use them to foster our technology and sales channels.
*As of March 31, 2020

Nidec has executed M&As on both a local and international scale
Here are the specific benefits of Nidec's M&As

Creating synergies with existing businesses by reducing procurement costs and expanding sales channels

Nidec is invested in improving the good management and growth of the companies acquired, and also in creating synergies* with existing businesses so as to encourage mutual development.
These synergies can include reducing costs by centralizing parts procurement, developing technologies and expanding sales channels in new fields.
This M&A strategy has led to dramatic growth, going beyond the mere sum of its parts.

*Synergies: Effect whereby companies cooperate to effectively use management resources, through combination and integration in order to generate added value that goes beyond the mere total of sales and profits.

Example of an M&A
Full-fledged entry into the electric pump market through the acquisition of GPM

In February 2015, Nidec acquired German automotive pump manufacturer Geräte- und Pumpenbau GmbH (GPM, currently Nidec GPM). GPM develops, manufactures, and sells water pumps, oil pumps, and module pumps, and enjoys a leading share in the European market.

We decided to acquire GPM in light of expectations for a dramatic increase in demand for motor-powered electric water pumps and electric oil pumps. With the recent global trend for stringent CO2 regulations, demand is rapidly growing among automakers for electric, hybrid, and start-stop system-equipped vehicles.

Combined, our motors and GPM’s pumps have enabled us to make major leaps in the electric pump’s high growth-potential market. In addition, integration with Nidec Elesys’s electronic control unit (ECU) technologies has helped to develop electric oil pump power packs by combining pumps, motors, and ECUs. This has accelerated the shift from motor units to modularizations*, systems, and higher added value. Cost cuts through the in-house supply of parts is also a form of group synergy.

Furthermore, GPM boasts a 70-year history and close relationships with major European manufacturers—including Volkswagen, Daimler, and BMW. Accordingly, GPM has allowed us to expand our sales channels to these manufacturers while also gaining a more timely understanding of future needs.

*Modularization: Bringing multiple components together to manufacture products with a cohesive function.

However, Nidec’s growth hasn’t been solely due to the success of M&As

Nidec’s expansion relies on both organic growth and M&As

M&As may be a key strategy, but that does not mean that Nidec has grown through them alone.
We could build up the strong foundations we now have by pursuing growth and expansion in our existing businesses as well.
The M&As and organic growth of existing businesses have supported the expansion of Nidec.
