Large-Scale Flooding in Thailand Causes Extensive Damage, Nidec Hastens to Resume Production.

In 2011, just as Nidec was recovering from the impact of the Lehman Brothers collapse and embarking on a renewed growth trajectory, it was struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake and major flooding in Thailand. Fortunately, Nidec’s employees and their families were not injured in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and its production facilities were not seriously damaged, but Nidec was severely affected by the large-scale flooding in Thailand that began in July of the same year and continued for more than three months.

At the time, more than 60% of its HDD motors were manufactured in Thailand, and six of its seven plants in Thailand, including the parts plant, were inundated by the flooding. In order to fulfill its responsibility as the top manufacturer of HDD motors, Nidec quickly restored operations and took countermeasures, and by December of the same year, all six of its flood-damaged plants were back in operation. The experience of the floods was also the basis for a worldwide review and restructuring of the supply chain.

Under the Vision 2015, the medium-term strategic goal Nidec initiated in 2010, Nidec shifted its business portfolio to four pillars: small precision motors, automotive motors, home appliance, commercial and industrial motors, and other product groups. Accordingly, in April 2012, the company reorganized its business divisions, which had previously been managed by business sites, and established four Business Units by product and market.

Incidentally, FDBM is an acronym for Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motor.

Nidec Research and Development Center Opens.

Since 2010, Nidec had been moving away from the shrinking Japan market to seek markets overseas, especially in emerging countries, and had developed production and sales bases in those countries. In conjunction with this, Nidec established Nidec Research and Development Centers in Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan, which serve as research bases for developing new technologies and products that hold the key to entering new markets.

The core of these laboratories was the Nidec Research and Development Center, a world-class motor research and development center, which was relocated and expanded from the Motor Engineering Research Laboratory in the Tokyo Building to Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. Construction of the institute began in October 2011, and the facility went into operation in fiscal 2013 (January 2014), the year of the company’s 40th anniversary. The new facility was designed to speed up the pace of marketization by conducting applied research and product development in collaboration with domestic and overseas research bases, including the Central Technical Laboratory at the Kyoto headquarters, as well as the Technical Centers in Shiga and Nagano, not to mention Singapore and Taiwan.
