Nidec Way Is Established as a Code of Conduct for All Group Employees.

In January 2015, Nidec established the Nidec Way, a common code of conduct that all Nidec Group employees should follow. The Nidec Way was established in response to the increase in the number of employees with various nationalities, languages, cultures, and values that accompanied the proactive global expansion of the Nidec Group, and the fact that there was some variation in each employee’s understanding of the Nidec Policy.

In 2016, the company changed its multi-brand strategy, which had previously allowed individual companies to develop their own brands, and announced a policy to unify the group’s brands under the Nidec name. In December of the same year, the first TV commercial since the company’s founding, “What if Nidec had never existed,” aired nationwide. In January 2017, the corporate brand logo was unified under the Nidec name, and in March, a full-page advertisement with the theme “One Nidec” appeared in major national newspapers. In April, the uniforms of all group companies were unified, and a thorough one-brand strategy was implemented.

Nidec’s Consolidated Net Sales Exceed One Trillion Yen for the First Time.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, Nidec achieved net sales of 1,028.4 billion yen (up 18% from the previous fiscal year), joining the ranks of 1 trillion yen companies, which had been the group’s goal for 42 years since the company’s establishment. Operating income also reached the 100 billion yen mark, and all items, including income before income taxes and net income, reached record highs.

The company’s business portfolio shift to the two new business pillars of motors for automobiles and motors for home appliances and industry, its entry into emerging markets, and the shift in management and group structure from federal management to global integrated management were the factors behind its strong performance.

Having achieved consolidated net sales of 1 trillion yen, in April 2015 Nidec announced Vision 2020, its new medium-term strategic goal of achieving net sales of 2 trillion yen, operating profit ratio of 15% or higher, and return on equity (ROE) of 18% or higher in fiscal 2020, taking a new step forward toward further growth.

Nidec Develops the Traction Motor System (E-Axle) Including Gearbox and Inverter.

In September 2017, Nidec developed an innovative drive motor that can be installed in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs), and began production in April 2019. Called E-Axle, it is a traction (drive) motor system that integrates a drive motor, inverter, and gears.

E-Axle achieves miniaturization through the introduction of a cooling system that prevents the performance degradation of magnets due to heat. It delivers an output range of 40 to 150 kW (150 kW model) despite being lighter than competitors’ products, and can be used in a wide range of vehicles, including compact cars as well as sedans and sport-type multi-purpose vehicles. In December 2018, prior to the start of production, the product was selected for use in China’s GAC New Energy Automobile’s new EV, the Aison S. Since then, it has been adopted by automakers in Europe, the U.S., South Korea, and other countries, and was expected to capture the No. 1 market share in China by FY2021.

The First-Phase Building of the New Nidec Center for Industrial Science Facility Opens.

The first-phase new building of the Nidec Center for Industrial Science (Seika-cho, Soraku-gun, Kyoto Prefecture) opened in Keihanna Science City in October 2015, with the aim of strengthening the foundation of manufacturing and creating technologies that contribute to the world through networking with universities, research institutes, and companies.

Research themes include robots and elemental technologies for robots (control, sensors, information, advanced circuit technology, etc.) and a wide range of production technologies. In addition to researchers belonging to the center, the new building houses development and design staff from group companies and Business Units whose main work is production technology, and has expanded to become the core base for the group’s production technology. Furthermore, the center pursues open innovation with universities, research institutes, and companies to create technological innovations, without focusing on proprietary technologies. The facility started out with a staff of 350, and after the completion of the second-phase building, it will be a large research facility with a staff of 1,000.
