Nagamori AwardsApplication Guidelines

Motors are now an indispensable part of our daily lives. It is claimed that motors use 55% of the electricity generated around the world today. This is why the research and development of motors is now a truly significant theme for both creating affluent lives and permanently conserving the global environment. To further promote motor-related technological researches and developments, we will start accepting applications for the 10th Nagamori Awards, as described below:

Fields covered by the Awards Technical fields related to motors, actuators and power generators, and their control methods, application technologies, etc.
Applicant eligibility Applicants must be entry to mid-career researchers or development engineers who have made an outstanding achievement in the fields covered by the Nagamori Awards. Entry to mid-career – normally defined as no more than 30 years of research after obtaining the Bachelor’s degree.
Application method Self-nomination or nomination from academic institution are accepted. A recommendation letter by an expert in the field covered by the Awards, or a senior member of your Academic Society, organization, research department, etc. must be submitted.
Application period November 01, 2023 - January 31, 2024
Applications must be postmarked on, or before, January 31, 2024
Application condition Documents must be submitted in either English or Japanese.
Documents to submit They must be submitted in printed copies and electronic files.
Awards & prizes Nagamori Awards will be given to approximately six people. The winner of The Grand Nagamori Award will be announced during the Awards ceremony. The Grand Nagamori Award winner will receive a prize of 5 million yen, and each of the Nagamori Award winners will receive 2 million yen.

1. Fields covered by Nagamori Awards

Technical fields related to motors, actuators and power generators, and their control methods, application technologies, etc.

2. Applicant eligibility

Applicants must be entry to mid-career researchers or development engineers who have made an outstanding achievement in the fields covered by the Nagamori Awards.

4. Application procedure & form

1) Nomination

  • Self-nomination or nomination from academic institution are accepted. A recommendation letter by an expert in the field covered by the Awards, or a senior member of your Academic Society, organization, research department, etc. must be submitted.

2) Application procedure

  • Download an application form (written recommendation, curriculum vitae, and achievements) from the “Nagamori Awards” section of our Foundation’s website, and fill it out in either English or Japanese.

  • ① Applicants are required to submit the following documents:
    • 1) The application forms designated by Nagamori Foundation (two Word documents)
      ・Written recommendation (It is OK to use a form designated by your institution.)
      ・Curriculum vitae and Achievements
      The above information should preferably be provided in English (this section only).
    • 2) Supporting documents and information that describe your achievements

      In principle, these documents and information should be in either English or Japanese. Documents or information written in any other language may not be used as reference.

      ※ Please note:

      Nagamori Awards aim to recognize the works of those who achieved innovative research and development results especially through active engagement in motor-, actuator-, and power generation-related research to address such major issues as “creating affluent lives” and “permanently conserving the global environment.” Any format may be used to describe your innovative research or development achievement so long as it is in a field covered by our Awards, but your achievement must be clearly understood in a form of writing such as a thesis, a patent, or technical report (written by you alone or jointly with others).

  • ②Application method

    Please apply by E-mail, attaching all the documents in①above and also physically mailing us the hardcopy of the documents as well. The mail containing the documents should be postmarked on or before January 31, 2024. The Word files designated by Nagamori Foundation, that include a written recommendation, a curriculum vitae, and a record of your achievements should be mailed in their original format, not converted into an image file (PDF, etc.).

    Please kindly notify us immediately after you have mailed your documents by emailing us at n.awards@nidec.com, with a title, “Nagamori Awards Application (Your Name)”, attaching all your application documents electronically.

    ※ Please note:

    • ・The submitted documents and other information will not be returned under any circumstances.
    • ・The submitted documents and other information will be used only for the purpose of selecting Nagamori Awards winners.

5. Conditions to win Nagamori Awards

① Candidates must attend the Awards ceremony to be held on September 08, 2024, give a lecture in English, and submit all the documents requested by the Secretariat (Nagamori Foundation will bear travelling expenses and accommodation fees for the winner and his/her companion to attend the Awards ceremony).

② Candidates, regardless of their nationality, domiciles, etc., must be able to communicate in either English or Japanese.

6. Awards

  • ・Nagamori Awards will be given to approximately six(6) people.
  • ・The winner of the Grand Nagamori Award will be announced during the ceremony.
  • ・The Grand Nagamori Award winner will receive a prize of 5 million yen, and each of the Nagamori Award winners will receive 2 million yen.
  •  *No candidates will receive multiple Awards.

7. Judging and deciding the winners

The winners of Nagamori Awards will be decided after strict judgment by an impartial panel of judges. No inquiries regarding the status or details of the judgment will be accepted.

8. Public announcement of the judgment result

The result will be announced on our Foundation’s website, and winners will be notified, in late May 2024.

9. Revocation, cancellation, and return of Nagamori Awards

Nagamori Awards winners who have been found in either of the following cases may have their Awards revoked or cancelled, and be requested to return their prize.

  1. (1) Any of their submitted documents are found including false or untrue information; or
  2. (2) Nagamori Foundation’s Board of Directors or Review Committee determines that any candidate to be inappropriate for the Nagamori Awards’ purpose.

10. Other information

Awards winners, their achievements and lectures at the Awards ceremony, and other information are planned to be published on our Foundation’s website and other places.
