Nidec GPM's Technical Capabilities

Development

Research and development are the foundation for sustainably strong results.

For the last 80 years, we have proved time and again our enthusiasm for new developments.

Pioneering milestones in the field of engine & motor cooling and lubrication bear out our technological leadership status. Important milestones along this path were the ECF pump, for which a patent was applied for in 2009 for the first time, and the development of electric oil and water pumps.

The fact that every tenth employee at NGPM is involved in research and development shows how crucial continuous innovation is for us. We achieve excellent progress results by placing special emphasis on top-class, trained know-how with a classic background in mechanical engineering. We also make increasing use of the disciplines of electrics, electronics and software. Ongoing further training in all sections of the company guarantees a continuously high level of professional capability.

With this commitment, we aim to expand our core competence, especially in the field of automotive electrification. The goal is not only to make a contribution to future-oriented mechatronic products, but to continue to contribute to verifiable reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Spotlight on electrification

The NIDEC Corporation is the world's largest manufacturer of electric motors.

The combination of excellent motor capabilities and NGPM's skills in mechanical pumps is a future-orientated blend. Together with partners in the NIDEC Group, we are developing novel electrical water and oil pump concepts for passenger car applications in the 12 and 48 volts range as well as high-voltage components for electric vehicles. This enables us to improve the performance of our products continuously, while reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

The symbiosis of NIDEC and NGPM paves the way for the development of powerful electric pump systems. This consolidated approach will enable us to deliver the right system for every type of vehicle in the future. In this way we intend to inspire both staff and customers.

With more than 60 years of experience in water pumps for passenger car and truck applications, we are in a position to develop high-quality coolant pumps for the automotive industry and to scale them up to mass production.

Our pumps are known for their high degree of functionality.

In particular, computer fluid design and CAD-optimised systems enable us to achieve very high levels of optimisation for our pumps.

At present, we have 120 people employed in R&D, divided across series development, pre-development and testing as well as simulation and calculation.

In addition, our 30 years of experience in the field of gear oil pumps speak for themselves.

For this purpose, we use synergies drawn from the Nidec Group for brushless motors and the corresponding control systems.

Our switched and mechanical water pumps, which are well established on the market, achieve fuel savings of 1-3%.

We make full use of state-of-the-art CAD systems with strong networking and data exchange with our customers and suppliers.

By providing electrically driven pumps, we support the development trends of our customers towards electrically powered vehicles, both PHEVs (plug in hybrids) and BEVs (battery electric vehicles).
