After graduating from the Technical University of Dresden with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mr. Georgoussis started his academic career at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT. Focus of his research was the machining of aerospace components made of hard to cut materials, such as Inconel 718 or γ-TiAl alloys. Mr. Georgoussis's interest in gear manufacturing was sparked by his encounter with gear skiving during his time at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, which led him to move to the Gear Department at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University, to focus on this field.
In 2023, Mr. Georgoussis moved to Nidec Machine Tool Corp. (NMTJ) in Japan. As a deputy engineering manager in the development division, he is involved in development projects concerning gear cutting tools, gear machines and process development. Furthermore, Mr. Georgoussis is a key member of the collaboration projects and activities between NMTJ and the WZL.

Interview

Q:Let’s start by going back to the year 2017, when the collaboration between NMTJ and the WZL started: back then you were a research associate at the WZL. What was your image of NMTJ then and has it changed since you joined us?

AdrianosI had the pleasure to work with some of the NMTJ team members in an NMTJ-WZL collaborative project. And I was very impressed by the know-how, the work ethic, and the motivation of the NMTJ team members. The indefatigability with which they followed the project objectives, always open for new ideas was inspiring. Since I joined NMTJ and started working in Japan I realized that this constant motivation to create and improve was not limited to a few individuals, but it was a core value within the company. So yes, my view of NMTJ has changed... it got even better.

Q:What motivated you to join NMTJ?

AdrianosWell first the facts: NMTJ is a global leader in the gear machine tool industry, with operations in over 20 countries. The company has a strong track record of growth and invests heavily in research and development, fostering a culture of innovation. When NMTJ offered me the position as a Deputy Engineering Manager in the Development department I knew that I would have the opportunity to work at the forefront of the gear machine tool industry, to contribute to the development of innovative technologies that will shape the future of gear manufacturing, and to make a real impact on products that are essential to our everyday lives and those that will be in the future... How can I say no to that?

Q:What is your image of Japan? And how do you adapt to changes and new challenges in this new environment?

AdrianosFive years ago, I would have never thought that I would be living and working in Japan today, but I am so glad that I am, and I am committed to making the most of my time here. I have a very positive view of Japan. It is a technologically advanced country with a strong and stable economy and rich culture. In the first weeks after coming here there was a lot to do. Find and move to an apartment, register as a permanent resident at the local municipality, open a bank account, and so on. The NMTJ HR department was, and still is, very helpful in these matters and I am grateful for their support. The efficiency with which they find solutions is remarkable. Furthermore, I took lessons in Japanese to help ease my way into living and working in Japan. On a day-to-day basis I try to speak as much Japanese as possible to improve my skills, but English is still the main Language I am using. After all, my colleagues come not only from Japan but from all around the world: China, India, Italy, the Philippines, Brazil, to name a few.

Q:How do you see your role evolving in the future and contributing to the company’s growth?

AdrianosI am excited to be a part of the NMTJ team and to contribute to the company's growth in Europe. I believe that my skills and experience in engineering and gear manufacturing can be valuable as NMTJ continues to expand its European operations.
In the foreseeable future, I see myself playing a key role in bridging the gap between Japan and Europe. This will involve working closely with my colleagues in Japan to understand the company's culture and values, and to translate this knowledge into a European context. I will also be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to grow NMTJ's European market share.
I am committed to learning as much as I can about NMTJ's products and services, as well as the European market landscape. I am also committed to developing strong relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, partners, and government institutions. I am confident that I can make a significant contribution to NMTJ's European business, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to achieve our goals.
