Field weakening

In a motor using a permanent magnet, the maximum speed is proportional to the applied voltage and inversely proportional to the magnetic flux of the permanent magnet. In order to raise the maximum speed under a constant voltage, it is operated so as to cancel the permanent magnet’s magnetic flux, via the flux caused by the armature current. This is called field weakening.
