Contribution through business activities

Climate change poses a critical impact to global biodiversity. As a global business entity, the Nidec Group strives to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions and to indirectly conserve biodiversity while providing highly energy-efficient motors and related products. Furthermore, we strive to conserve biodiversity through stringent water quality and discharge management and greening activities while considering the impact on ecosystems.

Contributions by Volunteers and Donations

As part of the "NIDEC Green Campaign", the NIDEC Group engages in forest maintenance, Satoyama conservation, reforestation, and green space maintenance activities. Furthermore, many of our sites contribute a portion of the proceeds from special menus served at their canteen to forest conservation funds.

Tree planting

As part of our environmental conservation activities, the Nidec Group has been actively engaged in tree-planting activities across Asian countries including Thailand, the Philippines, and Japan. To date, we have planted a total of over 20,000 trees. Tree planting plays a vital role in mitigating climate change by sequestering CO₂ from the atmosphere. We estimate the cumulative amount of CO₂ sequestration to be approximately 1,093.5 tons*.

Tree planting
*The CO₂ sequestration is estimated at 0 for the first four years following planting, followed by 11 kg per tree annually from the fifth year onwards. The calculation methodology is based on the standards established by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) in Thailand, the country where the NIDEC Group conducts its most extensive tree-planting.

Tree planting in Thailand

While Thailand has achieved significant economic growth through the active attraction of industry, it also faces environmental problems such as deforestation. Since 2007, the Nidec Group has been actively engaged in tree-planting and seeding activities. To date, these efforts have mobilized a total of 4,574 participants have planted 16,730 trees and sown 3,500 seeds.

Tree planting in the Philippines

Since 2021, we have collaborated with local companies and NGOs, and our employees have participated in mangrove planting activities. These efforts play a vital role in restoring mangrove ecosystems, controlling soil erosion, and enhancing water purification. To date, we have planted over 2,400 trees. The scope of the activities is broadening year over year.

Tree planting in Japan

Takisawa Machine Tool Co., Ltd. (Okayama Prefecture in Japan) is an active participant in the prefecture's "Forest Building in Collaboration with Enterprises" project. Under this project, the company has designated a 1.1-hectare public forest in Shinada (Takebe, Kita-ku) as the "Takisawa Forest". Since 2019, it has supported the planting and cultivation of 3,300 low-pollen Japanese cedar and cypress trees. Furthermore, the company's contributions have been officially recognized under Okayama Prefecture Carbon Dioxide Forest Absorption Evaluation and Certification System. In fiscal year 2023, we obtained certification for 4.27 t-CO₂/year in CO₂ sequestration amount through tree planting of 0.90 hectares and forest maintenance, such as weeding and underbrush clearing.

Other actions

The Nidec Group engages in cleanup activities around its business sites globally. Through the active participation of employee volunteers, we strive to promote environmental beautification and the preservation of biodiversity.

As part of these efforts, we collaborate annually with local businesses, the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA)—a government agency responsible for the environmental conservation, resource management, and development of Laguna Lake and its watershed—and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Biñan, which oversees environmental protection in Biñan City. Together, we participate in the International Coastal Cleanup. In the previous fiscal year, we collected approximately 140 bags of waste. The collected waste was sorted into recyclable resources and other categories; this process has served to heighten environmental awareness among all participants.
