Reversible motor

Literally, a reversible motor is a motor in which the rotational direction can be reversed, but the term is used specifically to refer to the special case of a capacitor-run motor in which the main and auxiliary windings have the same specifications to simplify the circuit for reversing the rotation, as shown in Fig. (a). In some types, a mechanical brake is employed to quickly reverse the motor's rotation.
A two-phase winding is commonly used in capacitor-run reversible motors in Japan and the United States, but in Germany the capacitor is used in a Y- or Δ(delta)-connected three-phase winding, as shown in Fig. (b). The rotation can be reversed with the latter configuration as simply as in the former.
