Neutral zone
The region where magnetic field is almost zero between the two neighboring magnetic poles. When coil segments are in a neutral zone, no induced voltage arises, and hence the current is little even if the coil is short-circuited as depicted below. When the brushes leave a commutator segment in this state no sparks are generated.
