Switched reluctance motor, Early

In the 1960s, Davidson's motor became practical due to the invention of the thyristor, which is a semiconductor device that can withstand high voltage and large current. One of the modern pioneers in this area is John Byrne (1926-2016), whose prototype motor designed to provide tractive power to an automobile is shown. It is known today as a switched reluctance motor.
