Consequent pole

A magnetic pole generated automatically at the mild-steel (or soft-magnetic) sections because of the arrangement of permanent magnets in the vicinity. Figure (a) shows an example of a four-pole rotor employing two magnet pieces, while Fig. (b) is an eight-pole rotor that employs four magnet pieces. One of the reasons for making use of consequent poles is to conserve the use of high-cost rare-earth magnets.
