Environmental Performance

Environmental Performance 2018

Nidec produces and promotes a three-year medium-term environmental conservation plan since FY2004, and FY2018 was the final fiscal year of the fifth three-year medium-term environmental conservation plan, which started in FY2016. The plan was intended to reduce the three-year average of Nidec's important business-generated environmental load reduction items (i.e., greenhouse gases (CO2), electricity, water, and disposal) by 3% on an original-unit basis* from the base year of FY2015.

*Intensity basis: Per employee for non-production sites, and per US$1,000 of sales for production sites.
This plan covers Nidec Group companies' head offices, R&D sites, and production sites inside and outside Japan.

Past environmental performance

Non-production sites

Nidec's total greenhouse gas emissions, which has been on decline year by year primarily due to decrease in the total electricity usage, decreased by approximately 7% on average, and by approximately 16% on an intensity basis, during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018.

Nidec's total electricity usage decreased by approximately 2% on average, and by approximately 11% on an intensity basis, during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018 primarily due to electricity-saving effect.

Nidec's total water usage increased by approximately 2% on average primarily due to increase in staff size, but decreased by approximately 7% on an intensity basis, during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018.

Nidec's total emissions of final waste decreased by approximately 41% on average, and by approximately 46% on an intensity basis, during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018 primarily due to an improved recycle rate after a review of our waste disposer.

Production sites

Nidec's total greenhouse gas emissions increased by approximately 4% on average during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018, primarily due to an increase in capacity utilization and electricity usage based on production expansion, while Nidec's intensity-based greenhouse gas emissions decreased by approximately 6% during the same period, primary due to sales amount increase.

Nidec's total electricity consumption increased by approximately 7% on average during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018 due to an increase in capacity utilization based on component insourcing-based production line expansion, introduction of automatic production equipment, etc. as product demand increased, while Nidec's intensity-based electricity consumption decreased by approximately 3% due to sales amount expansion and an increased production efficiency per product.

Nidec's total water usage decreased by approximately 6% on average, and by approximately 15% on an intensity basis, during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018 primarily due to a decreased water usage in production processes.

Nidec's total final waste production increased by approximately 16% on average, and by approximately 6% on an intensity basis, during the three-year period of 2016 - 2018 primarily due to an increase in production volume and the number of factory personnel.
