Environmental Performance 2019

Every three years since FY2004, Nidec has been making and promoting a mid-term environmental conservation plan, and launched a Sixth Mid-term Environmental Conservation Plan in FY2019.
The Plan, which has new areas of activities, i.e., increasing renewable energy ratio and recycle and reuse of resources, in addition to the existing activity of reducing environmental load, targets to reduce the total average volume of greenhouse gases (CO2), electricity, water drainage, and waste disposal of the three-year period from FY2019 - FY2021 from the FY2018 results.
- Greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions: Down 10%
- Use of fossil fuel-originated electricity: Down 10%
- Use of renewable energy-originated electricity: Up 15%
- Water drainage: Down 7%
- Total waste disposal volume: Down 5%

Past environmental performance

Non-production sites

Our total emissions in FY2019 decreased by approximately 12% from the FY2018 results, mainly due to a reduced use of electricity and gasoline.

Thanks mainly to power-saving effects, Nidec's total use of electricity during FY2019 decreased by approximately 9% from the FY2018 results.

Our total water drainage volume in FY2019 decreased by approximately 19% mainly due to an increase in the number of employees working from home because of the spread of COVID-19.

Our final waste disposal volume in FY2019 approximately doubled from the FY2018 results, mainly due to large-scale staff reallocation as part of a structural reform.

Production sites

In FY2019, our total emissions decreased approximately 4% from FY2018 results, mainly due to a decrease in the use of electricity and fuel in production processes after factories' operation rate declined.

Out total electricity usage in FY2019 decreased by approximately 2% from FY2018 results, mainly due to a decline in the factory operation rate caused by the spread of COVID-19.

Our total water drainage volume in FY2019 decreased by approximately 2% from FY2018 results, mainly due to a decrease in the water usage in production processes after our factories' operation ratio declined.

Our final waste disposal in FY2019 increased by approximately 6% from FY2018 results, mainly due to a large volume of waste generated from frequent production line transfers as part of a structural reform.

Number of business sites covered in the environmental conservation plan

The sixth three-year medium-term environmental conservation plan covers companies that were part of the Nidec Group as of the base year of FY2018.
